Approve a new device before you can read encrypted messages

Accounts and accessUpdated 10 August 2026

Direct messages in Projectri are end-to-end encrypted. The keys that read them live on your devices and never leave them, which is what makes the encryption meaningful — and it is also why a brand-new phone or laptop cannot read your message history until you approve it from a device you already trust.

What you will see

On a new device, direct messages appear locked, and the app says the device is waiting to be approved. Everything else — tasks, projects, boards, channels — works normally.

Approving it

If you have lost every device

Nobody at Projectri can decrypt your messages for you — we do not hold the keys. You can sign in and use everything else, and your future messages will work on the new device, but past encrypted conversations cannot be recovered without an existing device or your recovery phrase.

That is a real limitation of end-to-end encryption rather than a bug. It is also why we ask you to save the recovery phrase when you first turn it on.
